FAQs about Tanning
How many sessions are needed?
Once you arrive at a tanning salon, like Baja Heat Tanning, your needs will be assessed to determine the best tanning plan for you. The number of sessions will depend on your skin type, how vulnerable it is to heat, type of bed you choose, and how dark you want your skin to get.
How often should I tan?
The frequency of your tanning sessions will vary depending on your objective? If you want to get color, you’ll probably need more sessions —3 to 4 per week— than if you want to maintain your color —1 to 2 per week. However, the frequency will also depend on the type of bed you choose.
Can I tan more than once in a day?
You must allow your skin to rest 24 to 48 hours before your next session, or you risk burning your skin.
Why is my tan fading?
Those who have pale to fair skin can experience fading between sessions if they are too far apart. Ideally, they should be as frequent as twice per week, as a minimum, to avoid this from happening. Otherwise, your skin will have more than enough time to regenerate and fight the melanin that was produced by being exposed to UV rays. Once you reach your desired color, your sessions will be farther apart, but you can maintain your tan between sessions by using sunblock and moisturizers.
What is the difference between indoor tanning, outdoor tanning and spray tanning?
Indoor Tanning – The Ultrasun tanning devices come either lay-down or stand-up with each variation having their own advantages. These machines are equipped with Sunfit lamps that emit UV rays. Also, you can control a session and expose your skin to a consistent level of UVA and UVB light. Not only will the Ultrasun tanning device give you a stunning tan but also offer several benefits, such as a boost in Vitamin D levels and help to relieve sore muscles.
Outdoor Tanning – Sun tanning a.k.a. outdoor tanning is where you lay out in the sun to absorb UV rays to get a tan. But the drawback is that if you don’t live in a warm area, you can only enjoy the sun during the summer. Therefore, you can’t expose your skin to a consistent level of UV rays. Also, you can’t control the amount of UVA and UVB rays. Thus, giving you an inconsistent tan.
Spray Tanning – With spray tanning, you step inside a booth in your underwear, bathing suit or in the nude while a consultant uses an airbrush to spray paint on you the tan you wish to have. Rather than using UV rays to produce a tan, spray tanning an array of different chemicals. One of them is Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA) a compound that changes the colour of dead skin cells located within the epidermis. DHA can take several hours to show up, so most spray tans also contain a dye so that you can see immediate results. But since this is an artificial tan, you won’t enjoy the benefits of tanning, such as a boost in Vitamin D levels and other countless advantages.
Do You Need Tanning Lotion for Indoor Tanning?
This is one of those indoor tanning tips that is often overlooked because many people believe that tanning lotion isn’t necessary for this type of tanning.
While it’s true that you shouldn’t wear outdoor tanning lotion while tanning indoors because it is designed for outdoor use and because it could permanently stain a tanning bed, wearing a lotion that is designed specifically for tanning indoors can actually improve the tone of your tan.
If you want a tan with a bit of bronze or one that has some glow to it, then there are products that you can buy directly from the tanning salon that will help you achieve this result.
Many of these indoor tanning products will also hydrate your skin as they accelerate your tan so that it doesn’t dry out.
While indoor tanning lotion isn’t necessary in the same way that sunscreen is for outdoor tanning, it will improve your overall result.
Is there anything I should do to prepare for my spray tan appointment?
Exfoliate and shave the day before (or at least 8 hours before). This will get rid of any dead skin and provide a more even skin surface for the solution. Bring dark loose clothes otherwise tight clothes might ruin your spray.
FAQs about Sunless Tanning
Can I swim, shower, and workout with my sunless tan?
Of course! But be sure to wait at least 8-12 hours to allow the formula to react with your skin’s amino acids and proteins. In fact, the longer you allow the solution to remain on your skin, the longer lasting your tan will be. Swimming in highly chlorinated water frequently will reduce the length of your results.
What is the difference between the Bronzing and Clear Formulas?
Although completely water soluble, the Bronzing Formula may leave some cosmetic color on the inside of your clothing, sheets, and other materials – however, this color will easily wash out in cold water. If you are worried about getting color on various materials, use the Clear Formula. The two formulas will develop into the same tan in 8-12 hours, the only difference is that the Bronzing Formula applies a cosmetic top coat for instant color that will wash off in the shower.
What’s in the Sunless Bronzing Formula that makes me tan?
DHA, dihydroxyacetone, combined with anti-aging, skin firming ingredients is the main compound that produces a customized bronze glow. DHA has been an approved cosmetic additive by the FDA for over 30 years. VersaSpa® chemists have refined the technology to produce the most outstanding formulation that results in silky smooth, glowing skin with a refreshing after scent.
What can I do to extend the life of my tan?
Just like colored hair, a tan deserves special treatment. You wouldn’t want to use shampoos that strip the color out of your hair prematurely, and the same goes for the body wash you use with a tan. VersaSpa® has developed a line of products dedicated to preserving the life of your tan, including a pre-tan exfoliant, pre-tan intensifier, daily cleanser, and post-tan moisturizer as well as a spray bronzer for touch ups.
How do I know what level to choose?
We have expert salon associates available to guide you in the right direction when it comes to choosing a color. Level 1 tends to be used by those who have very pale, sensitive skin that easily burns when exposed to UV light. Level 2 & 3 are the choice of the majority of Aspen Tan customers. Most anyone (except those mentioned above) can get away with a Level 2 and look fabulous and natural, especially those with a cream colored skin tone. Level 3 is a little darker and looks best on those who tan easily or have olive to light-brown skin.
